Description
Four authors–two black, two white–provide questions to 37 hot-button questions regarding racial tension in the church. Learn to think biblically about matters of race and identity with Glenn Colley, Ben Giselbach, Hiram Kemp, and Melvin L. Otey.
From Ben, one of the authors:
Don’t think that this is just another book on racism with authors who already agree on everything socially. We did not want to add to the noise. Actual things–hard things–are said in this book that in my experience are seldom heard elsewhere. Though our words are not always perfect, this is (in my view) the most helpful book available on the subject of racism. I say this, not because I played a role in writing it, but because of the 3 other authors. In fact, if any one of us had spearheaded this topic alone, this final product would not have been nearly as good or balanced. The four of us brought our diverse perspectives to the table and realized we could be unified in the teachings of Scripture. We believe wholeheartedly the Bible holds the answer to racial tension in the church. There is no reason why white, yellow, red, brown, and black Christians–all washed in the blood of Jesus–can’t be unified as a family in Christ. Sin and man-made theories–not our skin color–are what threaten the peace of the church.
Let’s celebrate what we in churches of Christ have long valued: the irradication of human creeds and statements of faith. Let’s simply be “people of the Book,” including when it comes to the subject of race relations. Let’s expose sin. Let’s repent of wrongdoing. Let’s learn the mistakes of the past. And let’s keep loving one another.
