The Real State Of The Union Is Undeniable5 min read

Reading Time: 4 minutes
usaLast night, President Barack Obama gave the 2014 “State of the Union” address to congress. Over the course of his 65 minute speech, he discussed matters such as the tax code, infrastructure, federal minimum wage, energy, education, healthcare, defense, and diplomatic efforts.

Historically, the State of the Union address is presented annually by the President of the United States to a joint session of the House of Representatives and the Senate. This address fulfills the requirement of Article II, Section 3, of the U.S. Constitution, which requires the President “from time to time” to give his personal assessment of the current health of the union and the direction in which he wishes to lead the nation.

So what is the real “state of the union”? How healthy is America, really? The answer depends on your world-view. Should we determine our national health merely by analyzing the economic figures and gauging various political talking points? Or should we look at America by its relationship with God, “in Whom we live and move and have our very being” (Acts 17:28)?

Knowing God will “judge the world in righteousness” (Acts 17:31) by the Man Jesus Christ His Son (John 5:21), exactly how healthy is our nation?

The Normalization Of Homosexuality

Yes, the practice of homosexuality is a sin, just as theft, lying, gossip, and adultery are sins. We make a mistake when we categorize sins into “big sin” and “little sin” compartments. Yet, when the inspired apostle Paul described a depraved society in Romans 1, he viewed the degree to which homosexuality was accepted as a barometer for society’s distance from God.

America no longer blushes at homosexuality (cf. Jer. 6:13-15). Our shame has been replaced with approval (cf. Rom. 1:32). For example, last Sunday during the Grammys (the music industry’s top award night), 34 couples – some heterosexual, some homosexual – were wed in the aisle with spotlights on them during live national television during the song “Same Love” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis[1] [2]. And just recently, the Disney Channel announced plans to feature a family with two moms – a lesbian couple – this week in the final season of the popular kids show Good Luck Charlie[3]. These two examples are simply what are making headlines this week. Next week will have a new host of examples.

The pro-homosexual agenda is now being rammed down our throats. Yet God’s Word will always say the same thing about homosexuality (Rom. 1:26-28, 1 Cor. 6:9-11), and our nation no longer cares.

The Glorification Of Murder

Also in recent news, the National Right To Life estimates that there have been 56 million abortions since the Supreme Court ruling between Roe vs. Wade on January 22, 1973[4]. Tax-payer-funded abortion is common in this nation, meaning abortion is not only legal, but also encouraged by society.

Abortion is the taking of innocent human life (cf. Luke 1:41; 2:12). Murder is a sin and will keep one out of heaven (1 John 3:15) – just as any sin will keep one out of heaven. Not only does our society no longer respect God’s Authority, but our society no longer respects man, who bears God’s image (Gen. 1:26-27).

The Encouragement Of Laziness

For the first time in American history, the majority of Americans depending on government food stamps are of working-age[5]. 1 in 7 Americans are now on food stamps[6]. Are we really so naïve to think that there isn’t widespread abuse of our nation’s welfare system?

If a man prefers not to work, he shouldn’t be fed by those who do work (2 Thess. 3:10). Any society will break down when the masses can choose not to work when they can benefit more from government. The government has the God-given responsibility to manage tax dollars with wisdom (cf. Rom. 13:6-7). When society winks at laziness, it is rebelling against God’s very requirements it has replaced upon government.

Conclusion: The State Of The Union

While we have only examined a fraction of our nation’s problems, we can easily conclude that America is sick.

But what’s new? This comes as no surprise to Christians. We live in a fallen world (2 Cor. 4:4). Though our citizenship is in heaven (Phil. 3:20), we are still surrounded by darkness and wickedness (John 17:15-19). Our nation is comprised of lost souls, and we shouldn’t be taken aback when Godless people act like Godless people. Non-Christians will always act like non-Christians. For now, we groan as we await our hope:

For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. (Rom. 8:22-25, ESV)

So what can we do?

  • We should look forward to the hope we are promised (Rom. 8:22-25).
  • We should maintain a respectful, submissive spirit to our governing officials (Rom. 13:1-7).
  • We should pray for our government and our nation (1 Tim. 2:1-3).
  • We should be “salt and light” in the midst of our wicked world (Matt. 5:13-16).
  • We should be reminded by our dark world that heaven will be GLORIOUS (Rev. 21:4)!
  • We should follow God rather than man (Acts 4:19).
  • We should focus on saving souls from this world, rather than merely improving our quality of life on this earth (Luke 19:10).
  • We should rescue as many people as we can from Satan (Jude 22-23).
  • We should not give in to discouragement (Gal. 6:9), but keep our eyes on the prize (Phil. 3:14).

Ben, I believe your conclusion is quite true. Somehow in this world of darkness we must let our lights shine. I believe we --as christians--should hold our elected officials up for scrutiny. We need more representatives willing to take the hard stands against not just the evils mentioned here but more subtle issues as well.

    Very good.

The state of the union is still in the ungodly state it has always been. The truth of the matter is America was never founded on "Christian principles" slavery proved that. Nevertheless I agree with all you said. Amen! Thanks
